Between 1997 and 1999 Red Earth created a sequence of events in collaboration with Javanese performers Parmin Ras, Suprapto Suryodarmo, the dancer Rushini, and Dalang (Wayang Kulit master) Jatmika Edi Basuki (Toro).

Following an initial visit to Indonesia, and including an in-depth research trip to Java, this period saw a transformation in the direction and focus of Red Earth work towards a contemporary reinterpretation of ritual in the context of site-specific performance in the landscape.

Combining high and low technology, Red Earth began to formulate a unique aesthetic, establishing an arena for experimental installation and performance through a series of interactions between British and Javanese culture.
