A chalk-lined isosceles triangle drawn on a dry river floodplain on the edge of Dartmoor. A central pathway from east to west led from a Javanese gateway through a wooden enclosure to a water pool at the apex of the triangle.
Inspired by the alchemical process in the creation of the Javanese gong, Fire Sounding became a ritual of transformation through journey and action, specifically the casting - in performance - of a bronze bell.
Fire Sounding celebrated the science of creation in the active fusion of two disparate cultures Britain and Java separated by space and time but united through the elemental language of sound.
Created with Suprapto Suryodarmo, Fire Sounding was the first Java collaboration, and contained the seeds of motifs, concepts and imagery that would feature strongly in future Red Earth work. |
